The structure of bacteriorhodopsin 50 years on: electron cryomicroscopy and the dawn of membrane protein structural biology
Overview
Tuesday 8th July 2025 at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge
In 1975, Richard Henderson and Nigel Unwin published their seminal paper ‘3-Dimensional model of purple membrane obtained by electron-microscopy’ in which they determined, for the first time, the architecture of an integral membrane protein. The 50th anniversary is a great time to celebrate this achievement, along with the incredible recent advancements in cryo-EM where it is now the pre-eminent methodology for structural biology.
We would like to invite you to attend the symposium at the LMB. For those in attendance there will be a Happy Hour in the LMB canteen the evening before the meeting where folks can meet with Nigel, Richard and other current members of the lab. It would be lovely if you would be able to attend and enjoy this special day with your friends and colleagues.
