Are you wondering how best to utilise your scientific skills?

Are you planning your next step in academia or considering pursuing a career away from the bench?

Would you like more information about different scientific careers from a range of speakers?

Then join us to hear from three inspirational speakers who have gone on to do a variety of roles using their scientific knowledge, skills and expertise, the common thread being they have all spent time at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge.  We welcome them back to hear about their career paths, and to be inspired by what they have achieved.

This event is run in collaboration with CamAWiSE - Connecting and Inspiring Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine.

Speakers

Carly Dix, Associate Director, AstraZeneca

With a PhD in Cell Biology and Genetics from the University of Cambridge, Postdoc at LMB  with Simon Bullock in Cell Biology Division and over 14 years of experience in both academic and industrial settings, Carly is an Associate Director of Biologics Engineering, and Team Leader at AstraZeneca.

Louise Fets, Group Leader, MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences

Louise Fets is an MRC Investigator and CRUK Career Establishment Awardee, and has been head of the Drug Transport and Tumour Metabolism Lab at the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences since 2019. After specialising in Pharmacology during her undergraduate degree, Louise completed her PhD at the MRC LMB in Cambridge, studying signal transduction and gradient sensing in chemotaxis. For her postdoctoral training, Louise moved to the Francis Crick Institute and switched fields to focus on cancer metabolism, which is where she first became interested in membrane transporters.

Gisela Otten, Senior Investigator Scientist, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology

Gisela first joined the LMB in 2017 as a postdoc in Felix Randow’s group after which she moved to Amphista Therapeutics Ltd as a drug discovery scientist and biology lead. In June 2025 she returned to the LMB Randow lab once again. Outside of her scientific career Gisela played over 100 games for Cambridge United WFC and captaining the team for a large part of her career there. She is now a Director for the club and chairs the Board for the women’s team.

This free event is open to all within and outside of the LMB and includes lunch and networking after the talks (for those attending in person).
