We asked

In November 2020 we asked for input on which funders UKRI should recognise as an endorsed funder under the Global Talent Visa.

The Global Talent Visa is an immigration route provided by the UK Government to provide a fast and efficient visa offer to those working in science and research. Under the scheme, UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) can recognise other funders as an ‘Endorsed Funder’.

We want to increase the number of endorsed funders. Endorsed funders may be based in the UK or internationally.

You said

We have had nine responses with a total of 27 funders suggested to UKRI.

66 percent of you said that this tool was ‘Good’ or ‘Very good’.

We did

This was an expression of interest stage and was the first step in the process to becoming a recognised funder. We will now review the organisations that have been nominated and will decide whether or not to take these forward via our due diligence process.

We will update this section in January 2021 to update on progress. Thanks to your feedback we will look to use this tool again in Spring 2021 to ask for more input of who UKRI sound recognised as an endorsed funder.

Results updated 18 Mar 2024

As a result of the request in November 2020 where we asked for input on which funders UKRI should recognise as an endorsed funder under the Global Talent Visa, we are delighted to update that as part of that process five new funders have been added to the UK Research and Innovation endorsed funders list. They are:

  • UK Space Agency (UK)
  • British Council (UK)
  • Rosetree Trust (UK)
  • National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) (Brazil)
  • Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science & Technology (MEXT) (Japan)

We have a number of other nominated funders going through our internal processes and due diligence in addition to those above. For the full up to date list of UK Research and Innovation endorsed funders.

Overview

The Global Talent Visa is an immigration route provided by the UK Government to provide a fast and efficient visa offer to those working in science and research. Under the scheme, UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) can recognise other funders as an ‘Endorsed Funder’. Any researcher or specialist who is named or whose role is named on a grant from an endorsed funder can apply for the Global Talent Visa, provided they meet certain conditions.

We want to increase the number of Endorsed Funders. Endorsed funders may be based in the UK or internationally.

Why your views matter

UKRI is seeking input on which funders UKRI should recognise as an Endorsed Funder under the Global Talent Visa. Researchers working on a grant from an Endorsed Funder may be eligible to apply for a fast-tracked Global Talent Visa, and the benefits that this visa type confers. This will be of interest to research organisations, research and innovation funders in the UK and international research funders that fund or co-fund work in the UK.

Please note that this expression of interest is only the first step in the process to becoming a recognised funder and does not confer any obligation on the part of UKRI to take an application further. Nominated funders will be required to complete additional due diligence, which may include questions about an organisation’s governance and internal controls, adherence to peer review principles and financial stability.

Endorsed funders play no role in the visa process itself. When applying to UKRI for visa endorsement, researchers simply submit a copy of the grant award to confirm their eligibility for the scheme.
